Usui Reiki With Yvonne Oakes

Do you have a ritual that increases your sense of wellbeing?

Recently I have been thinking more and more about rituals and what they mean to me.

What is a ritual?

John Hughes (2019 in Business) stated

“A busy schedule requires you to find ways to make the most of your time. Rituals can help you optimise your life and get in the right mindset to accomplish your tasks”.

He explains that

“Rituals are routines to which you have attached a particular meaning. They help you change your mindset to prepare for certain situations – for example drinking a cup of tea in the evening to prepare you for going to bed; or gathering your work materials before sitting at your desk to prepare your mind to work”.

For me, a ritual is like a ceremony and a ceremony to me means celebration. Celebration meanwhile, according to the Cambridge Dictionary is “a set of acts… to recognise an important event”.

My rituals include

Tea in the afternoon, made in a teapot, drunk from a particular cup, in the garden.

Taking detox baths during the waning phase of the Moon ( the time between the Full Moon and the next New Moon). Whilst bathing I have a candle lit and specific music playing.

Preparing my room and myself for Reiki sessions. I light a candle, I light my salt rock lamp, I play specific music, I sit quietly drawing-in the energy.

Quiet time on the garden swing (which our puppy loves too!)

Using a particular pen for specific activities.

I don’t ‘do’ my rituals every day and some not even every week, but I know that when I do perform them I really am looking after Me. I can feel Me caring about Me more, and this has a knock-on effect in other areas of my life. I certainly feel less rushed. Rituals help me make better use of time somehow. Maybe because I stop, maybe because there is intention and focus, maybe because it’s for Me.

There is an Old Zen saying

“You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes a day, unless you are busy, then you should sit for an hour”

Maybe this applies to rituals too?… The busier we are, the more we need rituals?

I say this because recently life has been very busy with little time at home and self care not so evident. But this morning I took the time to follow a bath time ritual using Himalayan Sea Salts for detoxing, resting in the bath for twenty minutes whilst listening to tribal music. This was followed by moisturising my skin. I also used a facial wash (a delicious one given to me by a very lovely friend), taking the time to enjoy the scent and the sensation on my face. And during this whole process (ritual) I really was aware that I was looking after my body, and it felt good! As a result of being aware of looking after my body, I have eaten healthily today with no snacking or ‘comfort foods’. It has also been a productive day in many other ways too.

And so

For me it isn’t so much about setting an outcome for the ritual, but of what comes about naturally because of it, and the enjoyment of doing it.

I hope you found this useful

I hope this has been helpful to you in some way, and would love to hear about any rituals you have already, or that you may introduce into your life.

  • I loved reading this Yvonne, especially the detox bath, I’m going to try it! Would you be so kind as to remind me when the time is right please? X

    • Thank you Jane. I’m glad you enjoyed reading it! Detox baths are beautiful and especially when had in a ritual kind of way. They can be had at any time, but I especially use them as a ritual during the 2 weeks between the Full Moon and the next New Moon as this is the time for releasing or letting go, or for bringing things to a conclusion, in our lives. We are in that 2 week phase now, with the next New Moon on 7th September. Enjoy!.. let me know what you think of it xx

  • this is lovely Yvonne, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree – the busier we get the more we need our rituals/meditations or just time out.

    • Thank you Sally. You’re absolutely right, and it’s when you stop the rituals/meditation etc that you realise how important they are and the benefits they have for you xx
